On June 17th this year, business, community and government leaders will sleep without shelter on one of the longest nights of the year to help improve the lives of Australians experiencing homelessness.

In 2020, Vinnie’s CEO Sleepout raised $5.7 million dollars to help break the cycle of homelessness and poverty in Australia. Richard Kuipers was one of the business men and women who spent that long, cold night outside. His ‘home’ for the evening was a hard sheet of cardboard in the back of a shipping container, a sleeping bag and a small bowl of soup for nourishment. It wasn’t fun or pleasant or picturesque but for Richard, it was important.

It was important to remember how lucky he has been to start with nothing and build a successful, iconic Australia business. It was important to remember how lucky he still is today, working alongside his family, passing the business onto the next generation and having something to give back. It was important because it was a reminder that so many have so little and that whatever we can give, we should try. It was important because the most important things are not the most easy or comfortable or likable things but these are often the right things.

And this year, it is the right time for Catherine Kuipers, CEO of Two Men and a Truck and the second generation to run the company, to take her father’s place at the CEO Sleepout, continuing the legacy of doing the right thing, not always the easy thing

From humble beginnings in a backyard caravan, the story of Two Men and a Truck is both personal and universal. Since its inception in 1993, this family-owned business has taken its traditional values and matched it with forward-thinking vision, to grow from one truck to over 50 trucks and carry out over 10,000 moves each year.

Catherine has grown up with removals in her blood, answering the phones after school, scheduling moves on the weekends and eventually becoming a very hands-on CEO. There is nothing that Catherine has not seen, done or encountered in the removal industry.

This year, Catherine will give back and attempt to raise money for charity, to ameliorate and end homelessness in Australia and to help those who need a helping hand.
